Under the Covers: Convergences in Illustration, Literature and Design
If the conveyance of our literary ideas were reduced to the purely functional design of a till receipt, how impoverished we would be without the joy of experiencing the vision, sensory delights and surprises that transport our imagination through illustration and design: Media not only capable of response and interpretation of existing literature, but also, as evidenced in the burgeoning field of comics and graphic novels, capable of originating literature from within its own domain. But, wherever literature, illustration and design converge, we are faced with the responsible task of searching out a unique and appropriate relationship between the three, specific to each situation. This task, highly charged with creative potential, requires a high degree of sensitivity, for it is a characteristic worth remembering that both illustration and design can look good but still be dysfunctional.
